What Is The Most Expensive Mobile Phone In The World?
Having been browsing the web looking for a new phone I thought it would be a good idea to type into the search bar ‘World’s Most Expensive Mobile Phone’. Perhaps, I was being naïve but my assumption was that it would be in the thousands or maybe tens of thousands of pounds. But I was wrong...
The world’s most expensive phone costs £10,000,000 (or around $15,000,000). That’s right, you didn’t read it wrong £10,000,000...
The phone was customized by Liverpool based designer Stuart Hughes for a Chinese businessman to whom money is no real issue. It is an I-phone 5 with over 600 diamonds and gold all over it. As well as this, the central diamond in the design is a 26 carat diamond that the buyer has had in his family for centuries. This in itself is worth over a £1,000,000 most probably.
Quite why you would do this to a phone seems beyond me though. The i-phone 5 will be out of date in a few years and so he will have to go have another one made i’m guessing. However, if you have the money lying about to do this in the first place you could probably afford to 'upgrade' again in a few years time.
Stuarts Website says this about the phone...
“This beautiful handset took 9 weeks of detailed intricate work to re-create the original chasis of the iphone 5 in solid gold all of which was started and finished by hand, including a flawless black single deep cut diamond weighing in at 26 cts, most unique to replace the home button also the chasis was inlaid with a circa of 600 white flawless diamonds with full gold dressing for the rear section with the logo in solid gold with 53 flawless diamonds. This masterpiece boasts a massive circa of 135 grams of 24ct gold and of course sapphire glass set in the screen. The result was outstanding even down to the precise polishing to reveal its most beautiful harmonious appearance. The handset was commissioned for Stuart by a Chinese business man who has had the black diamond for a while , this handset total cost is £10 million”
Back In The Real World
I decided to look at some phones that were slightly more realistic to purchase if I had say £10,000 spare and didn't know what to spend it on. These are still ridiculously overpriced but slightly more reasonable than that I-phone...
Vertu Ti - £6000-£14000 (dependent on model)
In February 2013, luxury phone brand Vertu came out with their latest smartphone model. It runs on android and has luxury extras such as a titanium case. The screen itself of the phone is made out of sapphire and is thus pretty much scratch proof. Not only this, but Vertu have an exclusive 'Concierge' system where you call up 24 hours a day and they will help you with whatever you need. Whether you simply want to book a table at a restaurant or just need help in getting a cab; the Vertu Concierge service should be able to help you.
Tag Heuer Phones - £4000-£17000
Luxury brand Tag Heuer also do a mobile phone range too. These phones range from £4000 to £17000 dependant on how lavish the model you buy is. Like the Vertu Ti, the Tag Heuer phones tend to run on android and contain all the standard features of a smart phone (plus those added bonuses such as a sapphire screen.
Whether or not these phones are worth the astonishingly high price tags that are attached to them remains to be seen. It does almost seem like owning one of these phones is more of a fashion statement of wealth (much in the way that owning a Rolex watch is considered to be).
Would I Buy One Of These Phones?
If money was no object then I think maybe I would look into buying one of the Vertu models. Not because of any of its features (as they are pretty standard) but because I think its the best looking phone out of the lot though. Still though, at this moment in time, the thought of spending anything near that on a phone simply seems ludicrous. If you have the money to be able to buy one though, then why not.
Would You Consider Buying A 'Designer' Phone If Money Wasn't An Issue?
